Where is your favorite place to practice yoga?

The Himalayan Mountains in a small village called Thakure.

What do you like the most about practicing there?

The views, the fresh himalayan air, the strong himalayan mountain beneath my feet.

How do you practice yoga off the mat?

I strive to live by many of the yogic principles laid out in many texts, mainly the yoga sutras and the bhagavad gita
following the 8 limbs
practicing karma yoga – being in service to others, and using my gifts as service out in the world
practicing Jnana yoga – always studying yogic texts and spiritual teachings, meditation
practicing bhakti yoga – attending kirtans, playing kirtan and hosting satsangs, japa mantra, and keeping my own home alter and making offerings
Serving others is a huge one for me, so i also organized (11 years ago) a FREE yoga class that happens once a day/7days a week so we can make yoga accessible to all in our Long Beach Community

The world ends tomorrow. What would you indulge in tonight?

pizza – with regular gluten crust and real cheese!!!! extra cheesy !!

What was your first experience as a yoga teacher?

I taught my first class and thought every hated it. I was certain they hated it, because of the looks on their faces as they were practicing….i was a very young newbie, 23 years old, fresh back from the ashram in Grass Valley, Ca. i was a totally shy person, so i dont even know how i got through it… but i did.
when the students were all done with class and piling out of the room after savasana, i saw smiling faces, and was SHOCKED to receive Thank You’s and Hugs and words of gratitude for the class…. and i said “You liked it? Really?” they laughed and said, yeah, of course…. that was my first lesson in never gauge how the class is going by the looks on your students faces during their practice!!!! i was just relieved i got through my first class and no one got up and left during the class!

What is your favorite food?

vegetarian indian food!!!

Imagine you’re on the cover of Yoga Journal. What pose would you strike?

Natarajasana – Shiva is the lord of yogis, so i would strike that in his honor!

What inspires you to teach yoga?

Seeing others heal and connect with their true self, and step into their authenticity and sense of personal empowerment!
I see so many people grow and heal and transform their lives for the better, and its honestly the best part of teaching!!!
knowing that people have chosen to be more heart centered and aware, and then send them out into the world, and back in to their lives!! Wow, to me, that is revolutionary!!!!

If you could teach yoga anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I love teaching yoga to the villagers of Thakure, Nepal. But if i could go anywhere in the world to teach, i would love to teach anywhere there are sincere souls who eat transformation in their lives.

What has been your most embarrassing yoga moment as a teacher or practitioner?

I was teaching my weekend FREE outdoor class on a grassy bluff over looking the ocean. surrounded by 5 beautiful trees to give us shade.

I had been teaching this class for maybe 2/3 years now, and the number of students has grown to 60-75 every weekend. All eyes are on me. that’s a lot of eyes!
I was a new mom, so i had my 2 and a half year old son with me that day, as i did most saturdays ad sundays when I lead class on the bluff.
it was about half way through the class, i could see this interesting expression on the faces of the students gathered, one i hadn’t seen before. There eyes got really big, and some of them started pointing and said “LOOK” and as i turned around to see what all the commotion was about, i see my 2 and half year old son taking a pee on the tree just slightly behind me… in plain and obvious sight to all the yogis gathered out there for a class.
it was a bit embarrassing, but we all had a good laugh about it, and most importantly, my son wasn’t embarrassed, he was just answering natures call, IN NATURE, right behind me as i am teaching… ill never forget that moment!

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about practicing yoga?

If you are looking to redirect your life and its trajectory, get started! start simple, but get started!
If you want to feel better, do better, or be better in life… get on your mat and just practice!
like zig ziglar says ” you dont have to be great to start, BUT, you do have to start in order to be great”

What music are you jamming to right now?

Trevor Hall _ Fruitful Darkness Album

What has been the most rewarding thing about being a teaching yoga?

Again, seeing the change and transformation in the individual, and then seeing it trickle out into the community, the city, and the world !!!
