Featured Yogi – Jessica Skandunas

Are you a yoga teacher?

Yes

Where do you teach?

Iyengar Yoga Center la mesa

Favorite place to practice yoga?

RIMYI -pune India, and local – Iyengar Yoga Center la mesa

What do you like the most about practicing there?

In India its very impressionable and life changing, and here in La mesa Gloria has been my teacher a very long time and I have much respect for her and what she does for our community.

What was your first experience with yoga?

I was recovering from a fractured spine, I was 19 and came across an ad for Hatha yoga classes, so I went , I had no idea what yoga was but the ad intrigued me. From that day on I was into it. I attended her class for a few months then discovered by my house in la mesa was an Iyengar yoga center and began classes there…now it’s 22 years later! Still loving it.

How do you practice yoga off the mat?

I use ayurveda and self care practices, eat clean and use herbs, I meditate, use mantras and affirmations, spend time in nature, relax, mindfulness in relationships…

The world ends tomorrow. What will you eat tonight?

Hot fudge sundae.

Imagine you’re on the cover of Yoga Journal. What pose would you strike?

Probably just padmasana and a big smile.

If you could roll out your yoga mat anywhere in the world, where would it be?

My house.

What inspires you to practice yoga?

The stability of my mind and consciousness, these practices work and with time it only gets better. There is joy and happiness in a stable content mind. That s what keeps me going.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about trying yoga?

When it’s right for you, you will know and then you’ll show up.

Where can we find more from you?

Yogi Tones Podcast Episode 39 With Sabrina Garland – Constant Student

Sabrina’s yoga journey started in High School in 2001. She was told yoga would help with depression, ADD and learning disabilities. She opted to replace PE with Iyengar Yoga. After two years of attending Laurie Blakeney’s Ann Arbor School of Yoga, Sabrina realized that what she needed was the calm and focus that the physical practice brought in to her life. The small matters in life began to fall away, and she was finally able to focus on the bigger picture.

Sabrina began her teacher training in 2009 after moving to San Diego, CA. from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Sabrina believes that any level of student should feel uplifted and empowered by practicing yoga. She works toward making yoga a benefit for everybody!
