Where is your favorite place to practice yoga?

Anywhere there is enough space to spread out and kick up into a handstand.

What do you like the most about practicing there?

When there is sufficient external space, I can focus within.

How do you practice yoga off the mat?

For me, practicing yoga off the mat is the same as practicing on the mat. It’s definitely a practice and not perfect.
I try to remain as mindful as possible in the present moment. I try to be my best self as often as possible. I try not to push beyond my edge and rest when I’m tired. I try to laugh often, maintain a sense of humor and not take myself to seriously. I try to remember to breathe, particularly when stressed. I try to maintain alignment. The Yamas and Niyamas are a good resource.

The world ends tomorrow. What would you indulge in tonight?

Hugging my loved ones. Sharing memories. Telling silly jokes.

Chocolate or Vanilla?


Imagine you’re on the cover of Yoga Journal. What pose would you strike?

My wife has been on the cover of Yoga Journal twice. So I suppose I would strike the pouting pose since they took so long to ask me.

What inspires you to teach yoga?

Moving, grooving, meditating, breathing, centering, connecting and being with others in the present moment is so rewarding and inspirational. I always feel better after teaching or practicing.

If you could teach yoga anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I love the vibe at Yoga One. Tahiti sounds nice.

What has been your most embarrassing yoga moment as a teacher or practitioner?

Once early in my surfing experience, I paddled out in the morning before yoga class and got tossed head over heels by the waves. I went through what my friend calls “the rinse cycle.” Lots of water got in my nose. Fortunately the same friend warned me that later in the day I might have a flush of water from my nose. He was right. Just as we began class and were centering, a gush of water poured out of my nose. Fortunately, the students had their eyes closed and there was a box of tissues nearby. Thanks to my friend Rich for the heads up. Otherwise it could have been even more alarming.

What would you say to someone who is on the fence about practicing yoga?

Try to engage your core and stand on the fence with just one leg, with your eyes closed, arms extended to the Universe, deep steady breaths in and out through the nose, mind rooted in the present, observing the arising and passing of sensation in the body while love warms your heart. If you can do that while on the fence, you probably don’t need to practice, you’re already there. If you can’t do that, get off the fence and give yoga a try. There is such a wide variety of yoga to choose from there is bound to be something you enjoy and which will provide benefit.

What music are you jamming to right now?

So much good music!

What has been the most rewarding thing about being a teaching yoga?

Helping people to be happier and healthier is super rewarding. Each class is a celebration of life. I love that.
